Edition 223 – Caught Sleeping At Work?

Pulled this off a website called Atlanta Illustrated. Hopefully it’ll help you out of the abovementioned sticky situation at work.

5 Best Things To Say When Caught Sleeping At Your Desk

5. "They told me at the Blood Bank this might happen."
4. "This is just a 15 minute power nap they raved about in the time management course you sent me to."
3. "Whew! Guess I left the top off the Whiteout. You probably got here just in time."
2. "Did you ever notice sound coming out of these keyboards when you put your ear down real close?" And the NUMBER ONE best thing to say if you get caught sleeping at your desk…
1. Raise your head slowly and say, "…in Jesus’ name, Amen."

My favourite has got to be number one. Just don’t use it too much. Cheers… Þ

Edition 222 – Agape Love

Saw the video below from a friend’s blog. It’s about the love that a father has for his disabled son. It’s is an illustration of how God loves His children. I hope it touches you the way it has touched me.

Edition 221 – This You Got To See!!!

Isn’t it nice to be able to walk into a clean hotel room after a long journey, sit down, pour yourself a nice drink using the glasses you find in your room and sit back and relax. Well, do take a look at this video.

Disclaimer: the hotels you see in the video are, I assume, in the USA. So I don’t know how true is it for hotels in other parts of the world.

Cheers… Þ

Edition 220 – Demo, Demo and More Demo

Nice new banner? Reflects the Christmas mood? Well, that’s my attempt in keeping up with the Christmas mood.

Anyway, it has been a long past two days. Had to stay up to work for a bit because of tomorrow. We’re staging another demo for the clients during our weekly update meeting and because last week’s demo was a flop, we have to pull up our socks and make sure that things work this time round. Pressure? Of course. But I’m taking it in my stride. I’ll be a bit more relieved once tomorrow passes. And because of this, I don’t know how to submit a document which is due tomorrow. Guess it’ll be another late night tomorrow. Hopefully the rest of the week will be better.

I’ll update more when I have the time. Just sneaking a bit of time out to vent while my colleague fixes a problem. Until the next time, cheers… Þ

Edition 219 – Sharks Are Afraid of Dolphins?!?!

Apparently, sharks are deterred by dolphins, as proven by Jamie and Adam from the Mythbusters. Check out the video here.

A word to the wise: please do not try this at home!! I WILL NOT take any responsibility should the unwise attempt this at home. Cheers… :Þ

Edition 218 – Creating Good PowerPoint Presentations

Here’s something that I stumbled across that might help in creating better PowerPoint slides. The slides below are prepared by presentation consultant Alexei Kapterev. It’s okay, I don’t know who he is either. But the slides do make sense. Give it a look.

Edition 217 – Back In Taipei

Well, a week flies by so so fast. And it’s already the second day back in Taipei. As usual, lots of work that needs to be done. And the pace when I’m back in Singapore and when I’m here is so different. And hence, the need to readjust again. All in a days work… Haha..

Enjoyed my week back in Singapore thoroughly. Parents came down to spend some time with me, although I feel kind of guilty for not being able to spend as much time as I would want with them. Of course, time spent in church and with friends. And definitely, fantastic to be able to see Debbie after 4 weeks. That’s just simply indescribable.

The week went by pretty normally until Saturday, 10 November 2007. I shall immortalize this date in my blog. This was the day that time stood still for me (at least for a moment or two). This was the day where something that nobody thought would ever happen, happened. This was the day that Cam 1 toppled over while it was in the least risky part of setup: during the roll-out to the platform. My jaw dropped and I was at a total lost and in a total state of shock.

First thing that ran through my mind: where to get a replacement lens? Cam 2 just ain’t gonna cut it for tracking. And Pst. Ulf was preaching some more. Well, suffice to say I recovered. And thank God that the lens on cam 1 seem to be alright, although the casing was dented quite badly. But for the rest of Service 1, it developed a back-focus problem that rendered the lens partially useless and I had to swap my cam 1 person over to cam 2. Just a very, very eventful day. Unfortunately, just not the type of events that I would want to have.

Exaggeration and jokes aside, this incident really brought home to me (and I hope to the rest of the TV Ministry) of how much we sometimes take things for granted. When a particular incident hasn’t happened before or hasn’t happened in a long time, we take for granted that it will never happen or will never happen again. And this is when things get dangerous. We start to slack in our attitude towards things to a point that a mistake gets repeated.

And that’s where we start to think: are we good stewards? All the members’ sacrifices are just flowing back out into the world because of our carelessness. Why can’t we adopt a more responsible attitude and prevent something from happening in the first place? Yes, mistakes do happen and humans are not perfect. But if mistakes happen because we haven’t exercised due care, doesn’t that amount to irresponsibility?

I do hope that we, as a team, myself included, will begin to see that we have a stake in the ministry we serve in. We have a stake in the equipment that we use week in and week out to serve. And we have a responsibility to the church to use the equipment properly and to maintain it because the church has a stake in the ministry and the equipment we use too. We owe it to the church. It is a responsibility that’s placed upon us.

Wow… A post that’s supposed to be light-hearted turned out to be pretty serious. But that’s just some of the thoughts that are on my mind after what happened. Just thought that I share my two cents worth.

Until the next time, cheers… :Þ

Edition 216 – Leaving Taipei

And so I continue the tradition of blogging from the airport prior to departure. But this time round, I’m doing it in style. Instead of sitting at the gate holdroom and blogging while waiting for the boarding call, I’m sitting at the EVA business class lounge having breakfast, surfing the net and blogging away. Business class? Yeah. But before you think that this is a new company perk, it’s a free upgrade with my miles.

Anyway, it’s great to be able to go back to Singapore after four weeks here in Taipei. As usual, miss all the comforts of home plus church and of course Debbie. My parents are going to drop by as well next week for a short visit.

Kinda have a busy week planned ahead. Got a couple of dinners with friends and a outing on Thursday with the TV Ministry. Incidentally, Thursday is a public holiday in Singapore. It’s the day where the Indian community celebrates Deepavali. So another short work week in Singapore for me.

The project is going quite well. I hope that it will not drag on too long in Taipei and I can return permanently to Singapore soon. It’s coming to a stage where testing is about to begin and that’s when we shift in to troubleshooting mode. As of now, I still have some stuff on my plate that I need to complete. Me being in Singapore will make those tasks a bit difficult to accomplish but I’ll find a way. Perhaps will shuffle things around to make it all work.

Hope the flight ahead will be enjoyable. Let’s see what Eva Air’s Business Class has to offer. I’ll sign off now and get ready for boarding. Until then, cheers… :Þ

Edition 215 – Strangest In-Flight Announcement

This is definitely the most funny, entertaining and weird in-flight announcement that I’ve heard a flight attendant do. The flight attendant talks pretty fast, so turn up your volume before you start playing the clip and pay full attention.

I’m posting it here and the link goes into my “Videos” page as well….

Edition 214 – Windows Live Writer

Amazingly, Microsoft has released a application called Windows Live Writer. Although it’s still in beta, it’s beginning to impress me. I’m using it to write this review and I’m making this review up as I go along.

On first run, Live Writer, or Writer for short, will ask you for your blog URL and login credentials. From there, it’ll configure itself. For me, I’m using WordPress. Writer detected that and even downloaded some layout files for the current theme I’m using. It also works on LiveJournal and Blogger. Pretty cool stuff.

Windows Live Writer Web Layout View

On creating a new post, the editing interface in the Web Layout view gives you a WYSIWYG view of your blog entry. Just take a look at the picture above and you’ll know what I mean. Just looks like how the post will look when you post it online. Pretty cool. And there’s also a Web Preview view that simulates how the entire blog site will look like when you’ve posted the entry.

Anyhow, I shan’t go on ranting about this piece of application for too long. Can check it out for yourselves. Download it at http://writer.live.com. It’s still in beta but it’s functioning quite well. I know I’ll be using this application to post for a while… Cheers… :Þ
